What kind of lube do you all use?

Stop giggling, I'm taking about the stuff to size cases...

I've read a bit about homemade stuff using alcohol and lanolin or even alcohol and olive oil, anyone have any input on these?

I use a 5:1 mix of 5 parts 99% isopropyl alcohol and 1 part liquid lanolin. This is pretty much what Dillon's case lube is made of but my home made lube is alot cheaper. It works great and a little goes a long way.

FWIW, due to the alcohol, it might not be good for ...... um,....other things.

All I could find readily was 91%, will that still work? Still looking for lanolin though.

Yeah I use the alcohol / lanolin stuff. Lower percent alcohols can be used, but the high proof stuff evaporates faster. You WANT all the alcohol to evaporate before sizing.

I've seen many places online to order both the alcohol and lanolin, I was hoping to find a place locally... Thanks for the links though

I made the mistake of going to target for Lansinoh - It works well but it wasn't cheap. I told the check out girl it was for my sore nipples, she didn't laugh at all. (I'm a dude....)

99% isopropyl alcohol can be purchased as the "RED" container of dry gas. Be sure to check the container label. Do NOT use methyl alcohol. The containers I buy at Walmart and NAPA stores all say 99% isopropyl.

Now, the best place to get the real deal lanolin is from Randy Rat at Castboolits:

    Contact him here:

I hope that you are all also members of that forum. If you aren't, you should be.

I make my version of the Dillon Lube, using the dry gas alcohol, and Randy Rat's lanolin. The lanolin doesn't like to go into solution with the alcohol, you you have to do a LOT of shaking to get it to all dissolve. I use a dollar store $1 sprayer for spraying the lube. I put the brass inside a garbage bag, single layer, and spray the lube over it, generously. You want there to be enough to coat the brass, and run down the sides. Allow the alcohol to evaporate before running lubed brass into your dies. The brass should be somewhat dry to the touch.

The main reason for my asking is because I was using RCBS case slick, but I ran out and don't feel like paying $8 for a 2oz bottle of it anymore.

I am going to hear people laugh or say how bad it is but for years I have used regular spray on PAM for lubing cases never had a problem and I wet tumble after sizing just spray some on a folded up paper towel and roll them across the pad once and you are ready to go.

I put all of my cases in a reloading tray when I lube them, just line them up and give them a spray and size from there. Helps me have an idea how many cases I've sized and gives me a chance to give them a good once over for cracks and signs of wear.

I tried the lanolin/99% alcohol mix the other day using about a 16:1 mix. It worked better than the case slick I was using prior and I can get better coverage with the spray bottle I have. I. Pretty sure that's the stuff I'm going to use from now on unless something better comes along.
